Custom vs Standard Pipe Fittings: Which Is the Right Choice for Your Project?
For any pipe system, the pipe fittings are often the most crucial components. They allow pipe lengths to be connected and so enable any practical size and arrangement of pipes to be designed and installed.
Pipe fittings are used in a variety of systems, ranging from standard domestic plumbing through to the intricate systems encountered in oil and gas production facilities or water treatment works. All fittings have the same purpose, however: to protect the integrity of the system by preventing leaks and contamination.
The Difference Between Standard and Custom Pipe Fittings
Standard pipe fittings are produced in huge quantities around the world and so are readily available and relatively cheap. They are made to fit a lot of conventional pipe systems and they adhere to recognised international standards so you can rely on them to perform within stated limitations. They are ideal for simple projects that are not too demanding but are not suitable for specialised applications that have to operate in challenging environments.
Custom pipe fittings are designed specifically for particular applications. In these cases, the pipes may be of a non-standard size or have an unusual arrangement, with tight angles, special sealing needs and unconventional connections. The pipes may also carry caustic chemicals and other materials that will degrade standard fittings, and may be subject to environmental challenges that fittings made from standard materials cannot withstand.
Choosing Between Custom and Standard Pipe Fittings
The type of pipe fitting you use will depend on a number of factors. Standard pipe fittings will be suitable if:
- The cost of the fittings is important due to a limited budget. Since standard fittings are mass produced, they will be much cheaper to buy than custom fittings that need additional design work and special tooling. Take care, however, because if standard fittings do not fit correctly or are otherwise not suitable, their long-term cost may be much greater.
- The fittings are needed quickly. Standard fittings are off-the-shelf items that can be easily obtained from a variety of suppliers.
- The pipe system uses other standard components with which the fittings are compatible. A perfect fit is essential to prevent leaks.
- The environment within which the pipe system operates is not too demanding and the demands are within the stated specifications for the fittings. This ensures that excessive failure and downtime will not be a problem, partly because replacements can be easily obtained.
At times, however, standard parts will not do the job and custom fittings are necessary:
- If a pipe system has a complex layout with tight angles and unusual sizes, standard fittings may not go in without serious adaptation. In these cases, fittings need to be specially made to ensure they fit correctly.
- In harsh environments where the performance of the pipe system is critical, standard fittings will almost certainly be unable to withstand the challenges. These are typically high pressure, extremes of temperature and corrosive materials for which standard fittings are not designed. Custom fittings will be made from materials that are able to withstand these challenges without any degradation.
- If the pipework is old and standard fittings are no longer available, or if it is obtained from an obscure source, custom fittings may be the only real option to ensure a perfect fit.
- When developing a new pipe system with unusual dimensions, you may need prototypes in small quantities to test the system. This is only possible with custom fittings where prototypes can be adapted until fully satisfactory.
Using a standard fitting that almost fits and applying sealant or some other method to address the shortfall is not a sensible option. It will almost always result in leaks, damage and delays that will be more damaging and costly than obtaining custom fittings.
Mistakes to Avoid with Pipe Fittings
Pipe fittings prevent leaks and protect the system’s integrity. But they will not be successful if they do not have the required characteristics. For custom pipe fittings, this means they need to be specified and made correctly. Mistakes to avoid include:
- Choosing a material that is unsuitable. Certain materials are better able to withstand high pressure, extremes of temperature and the effect of certain fluids and gases. Choosing the wrong one will result in premature degradation and eventual failure that will compromise the system.
- Ignoring regulations and safety standards. For critical applications and challenging environments especially, compliance with regulations is essential. Fitting an unsuitable part can cause leaks, contamination and accidents, which can result in severe financial penalties being imposed and possibly legal action being taken.
- Mismatching parts and sizes. A fitting needs to make a precise and tight fit with pipes to ensure there are no leaks. Accuracy is crucial and using a fitting that is even slightly the wrong size can cause serious problems.
